The number of websites in the world is on the rise daily with tens of millions of websites seeking to grab a fair share of the global internet traffic and engagements. 

A local website is one which fulfills either of the following: It is owned by a citizen of the country; found within the boundaries of the country; operates/registered under the law of the country; or has its parent company's major activities resident in the country when compared to other countries. Websites with significant visits but which do not fulfill any of the criteria above were not classified as local websites in this article, e.g google.com.ng was not classified as a local website even though it has the '.ng' domain suffix. 

In April 2020, IABC Africa took a list of the most visited local websites in Nigeria using Alexa’s Traffic Ranks.

Here is the list of the top 20 most-visited local websites in Nigeria in April 2020.

1. Bet9ja.com

Bet9ja.com is the third most-visited website in Nigeria after Google.com and Youtube.com, and the first most visited local site in Nigeria, according to Alexa – a global internet traffic ranking firm.  Ranked number 202 in global internet traffic and engagement in late April 2020, Bet9ja.com has about 19,447 total sites linking to it.  Its global internet traffic ranking, however, dropped by forty-two points between March 10 to April 22 (from #160 to #202) following the closure of major sporting events across Europe and Africa due to the novel coronavirus pandemic. Bet9ja.com is the only Nigerian website in the top 500 most visited websites globally as of April 2020.

Nairaland is the online community created by Seun Osewa in March 2005. It currently has over a 2.4million registered users with over a 5.5million topics created to date.

Ranked number 790 in global internet traffic and engagement in late April 2020, Nairaland.com is the sixth most visited website in Nigeria after Facebook.com and Yahoo.com which are following Bet9ja.com consecutively, according to Alexa.com. It is the second most visited local website in Nigeria, only next to bet9ja.com, as of April 2020.  Nairaland.com has about 3,492 total sites linking to it.

In March 2020, Nairaland witnessed 35,228,755 visits from 6,728,187 unique visitors, totaling into 214,926,597 page views in 31 days.

3. Punchng.com

Arguably the most widely read newspaper in Nigeria, Punch Online (the online issue of Punch Newspapers) is also the third most visited local website in Nigeria. Punchng.com is ranked number 999 in global internet traffic and engagement in late April 2020 and also the seventh most visited website in Nigeria after Nairaland.com, according to alexa.com. Punch Online has about 7,705  total sites linking to it.

Registered on August 8, 1970, under the Companies Act of 1968 to engage in the business of publishing newspapers, magazines, and other periodicals of public interest, PUNCH (Nigeria) Limited has four main product titles - The PUNCH, Saturday PUNCH, Sunday PUNCH, and PUNCH Online.

4. Dailypost.ng

Ranked number 1,391 in global internet engagement in late April 2020, Dailypost.ng is the eighth-most engaged website in Nigeria after Punchng.com, according to Alexa - a global internet traffic ranking firm.  It is the fourth most visited local website in Nigeria, as of April 2020.  Dailypost.ng has about 3,622 total sites linking to it.

Located at 308B, Murtala Muhammed Way, Yaba, Lagos, Daily Post is a premium leading newspaper that is developed and written exclusively for Nigerians. It is packed with up-to-the-minute local and national news, politics, metro, business, entertainment, sports, and opinions.

5. Legit.ng

Legit.ng is ranked the tenth most visited website in Nigeria and the fifth-most visited local website in Nigeria in April 2020, according to alexa.com.  Legit.ng has about 7,035 total sites linking to it.

Founded on May 15, 2012, Legit.ng is a Nigerian digital media and news platform. It is one of the biggest publishers on Facebook by the audience in the ‘Media’ category. It was previously known as Naij.com.

6. Jumia.com.ng

Jumia is one of the largest online marketplaces in Africa with a presence in over 10 countries of the continent. A 2013 World Retail Awards winner, Jumia, was launched in Lagos in 2012. At Jumia, you can buy anything you want online at the best prices(Use my affiliate to highlight this sentence).

Ranked number 1,503 in global internet engagement in late April 2020, Jumia.com.ng  is the thirteenth most visited website in Nigeria, according to Alexa - a global internet traffic ranking firm.  It is the sixth most-visited local website in Nigeria, as of April 2020.  It has about 653 total sites linking to it.

7. Vanguardngr.com

Vanguard Media Limited, publisher of Vanguard Newspapers was established in 1984 by Mr. Sam Amuka - a renowned veteran journalist. The paper circulates about 120,000 copies daily nationwide with a daily Print Run of 130,000 copies to meet the growing demands of the market.  Vanguardngr.com is the online issue of the Vanguard Newspaper known for its promptness in breaking news and excellent sports journalism.

Naijaloaded.com.ng is one of the most visited online platforms that deliver hot fresh Nigerian music, videos, entertainment gists& news content daily to Nigerians, both home and abroad. Created in 2009, it has steadily grown into one of the most visited Nigerian websites with over 120 Million page views monthly, according to the website.

9. Lindaikejisblog.com

Born on 19 September 1980, Linda IfeomaIkeji is a Nigerian blogger, writer, entrepreneur, and former model. Her blog, Lindaikejisblog.com, is one of the most-followed entertainment blogs in Africa.

Linda Ikeji’s blog is ranked number 2,847 in global internet traffic and engagement in late April 2020. It is the twentieth most visited website in Nigeria and currently the eighth most-visited local website in Nigeria after Naijaloaded.com.ng, according to Alexa.com. Lindaikejisblog.com's global ranking improved by over 500 points (from #3,375 to #2859) over the past 90 days. It has about 4,816 total sites linking to it.

10. Thenationonlineng.net

Tagged the second most read newspaper in Nigeria according to a 2009 survey by The Advertisers' Association of Nigeria, thenationonlineng.net is the twenty-first most-visited website in Nigeria and the tenth most engaged local website in Nigeria, according to Alexa.com. It has about 4,978 total sites linking to it.

Founded on 31 July 2006, the newspaper became the first of its kind to gain nationwide circulation across the 36 states of Nigeria within two years of operation. It has over time gained wide online acceptance in Nigeria.

11. Gtbank.com

With an asset base of over 3 Trillion Naira, Guaranty Trust Bank plc is one of Nigeria’s foremost financial institutions with business outlays spanning Anglophone and Francophone West Africa, East Africa, and Europe. 12. Tooxclusive.com

tooXclusive is a music and review website. Launched in 2010 by Olutayo "Tyler" Duncan Sotubo, the website is notable for organizing its yearly tooXclusive Online Music Awards. They pride their establishment as the number one source for pan-African music entertainment, reviews, trending news, and celebrity updates.

Ranked number 3,144 in global internet traffic and engagement in late April 2020, Tooxclusive.com is the twenty-sixth most visited website in Nigeria, according to Alexa – a global internet traffic ranking firm. Tooxclusive.com's global ranking fell by over 300 points (from #2,759 to #3,144) over the past 90 days. It is currently the twelfth most-visited local website in Nigeria after Gtbank.com. It has about 2,789 total sites linking to it.

13. Premiumtimesng.com

Premium Times, founded in mid-2011, is a Nigerian media organization based in Abuja with a vision to help strengthen Nigeria’s democracy, advance the socio-economic wellbeing and rights of the people, promote and enrich their cultural practices, and advocate for best practices, good governance, transparency, and human rights, in line with the values expected of a modern democratic state. It is currently the thirteenth most-visited local website in Nigeria after Tooxclusive.com. It has about 3,746 total sites linking to it.

Ranked number 4,813  in global internet traffic and engagement in late April 2020, Paystack.com is the thirty-fifth most-visited website in Nigeria, according to Alexa.com. It is currently the fourteenth most-visited local website in Nigeria after Premiumtimesng.com and has about 104 total sites linking to it.

15. Channelstv.com

Endowed as the ‘Best Television station of the Year’ by the Nigerian Media Merit Award Trust thirteen times in the last sixteen years, Channels TV is the first Nigerian broadcaster to stream its television programming live for 24 hours. Ranked number 5,186 in global internet traffic and engagement in late April 2020, Channelstv.com is the thirty-sixth most visited website in Nigeria, according to Alexa.com. Channelstv.com’s global ranking improved by over 3,500 points (from #8,929 to #5,186) over the past 90 days as the global demand for news articles about the COVID-19 pandemic continues to be on the rise. It is currently the fifteenth most-visited local website in Nigeria after Paystack.com. It has about 2,492 total sites linking to it.

16. Thenetnaija.com

An abridged version for 'Networking' (Net) 'Nigerians' (Naija), NetNaija is a Nigerian forum and media download center with entertainment and discussion boards. It is a go-to site for the latest music, videos, music, gist, etc. It was founded in 2009 as proudlyboiz.com by OkunlolaAdekunleAbiodun who later partnered with Analike Emmanuel Bridge in its early days.

Ranked number 5,533 in global internet traffic and engagement in late April 2020, Thenetnaija.com is the thirty-ninth most visited website in Nigeria, according to Alexa.com. It is currently the sixteenth most-visited local website in Nigeria after Channelstv.com. It has about  60 total sites linking to it.

17. 9jaflaver.com

Founded on the 1st of January 2014, 9jaflaver is one of Nigeria's most entertaining and informative web blogs, visited by most internet users in Nigeria daily.

9jaflaver.com is the fortieth most-visited website in Nigeria and the seventeenth most-visited local website in Nigeria with over eighty percent of its traffics from Nigeria, according to Alexa – a global internet traffic ranking firm. It has about 906 total sites linking to it.

18. Jiji.ng

Jiji is an online marketplace that enables buyers and sellers to meet and exchange goods and services. Jiji was founded in 2014 in Lagos, Nigeria by Anton Wolyansky, who is the company's CEO.

Jiji.ng is the forty-second most-visited website in Nigeria and the eighteenth most-visited local website in Nigeria with over ninety percent of its traffics from Nigeria, according to Alexa.com. It has about  232total sites linking to it.

19. Kemifilani.ng

Founded In 2013 by KemiFilani, Kemifilani.ng is a blog that focused on weddings and entertainment news.

Ranked number 6,915 in global internet traffic and engagement in late April 2020, Kemifilani.ng is the forty-sixth most visited website in Nigeria, according to Alexa.com. Kemifilani.ng’s global ranking improved by over 20, 000 points (from #26,621to #6,915) over the past 90 days. It is currently the nineteenth most-visited local website in Nigeria after Jiji.ng.
