You need the following skills to thrive in the big data age

1. Social intelligence

This can be loosely translated to mean “street smartness’’. It is important to understand how to relate with people, how to talk to people, and how to handle disagreements.

It is also very important to learn how to express your ideas. Social intelligence enables you to know how to engage with people, the right tone, and the choice of words to use.

People have different approaches to life and understanding those differences and knowing how to navigate them helps to forge a helpful relationship.

 2. Learn how to sell yourself

This is a no-brainer, you have to know how to speak in a big family. There is no sphere of discipline that won’t require you to sell yourself.

If you walk in for an interview, you are going to sell yourself. The same goes for an artisan trying to get a client to work with him. You have to convince people to give you a chance. There are many ways of doing this without letting people see through it. It is one thing to acquire a skill and be good at what you do. It is another thing to create a system that guarantees you a steady flow of income through that skill. Learn how to sell yourself today

3. Be willing to learn

Our experiences shape who we are and there is a popular saying that “experience is the best teacher”. We should be open-minded and willing to learn from our experiences regardless of how ugly the experience was. Mistakes are what everyone is prone to do in the pursuit of their day-to-day activities. Failure to draw inferences and make adjustments to our behaviors from experiences can be dangerous. We should be open to learning new things, discovering new things, and also changing stance in the face of new and verifiable information.

These skills above give you an edge regardless of the discipline or sector you find yourself in. Learning how to use these skills requires you to be intentional about the way you go about your day-to-day activities. Read books, listen to podcasts on related issues, watch videos and get yourself to implement what you have learned. I’II  be rooting for you.
